About
“Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
- Viktor Frankl
Lindsay Mathews, PhD
I am a NY State Licensed Clinical Psychologist based in Brooklyn, NY. I have over 15 years of clinical experience working with individuals with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues. I began my career working with individuals with serious mental illness, personality disorders, and a history of legal involvement. I have particular expertise working with people struggling with emotion dysregulation, trauma, and career/life transition stress. I have worked with adolescents, young adults, and older adults in a variety of settings—from outpatient community mental health to inpatient psychiatric to correctional settings.
I have been trained in various modalities, and have an integrated approach drawing from psychodynamic psychotherapy, humanistic, Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness-based approaches, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), relational, and existential therapies. My approach to the therapeutic encounter is to embrace the uniqueness of each patient’s inner world, and explore it together. Often this involves slowing down, examining current experiences and stressors, as well as underlying core conflicts. When appropriate, specific coping skills will be provided and tailored to your individualized treatment needs.
